Who am I as a Communicator

3 assessments were carried out by me and 2 other people on Communication Anxiety Inventory, Verbal Aggressive Scale and Listening Style Profile. On communication anxiety inventory, it was unanimous that I was on a mild level which showed a consistency in how I truly feel about communicating with other people. I find that I may have the right words but then it depends on the context of the gathering which would affect my effectiveness.

On the other hand, when it came to listening style profile, I assessed myself as people-oriented while the other 2 people assessed me as action-oriented. This shows how much depth we have as human beings and therefore should not be put in box but rather explore who we are.

What surprised me the most was that the 2 people who assessed me were able to pick up the fact that I have a tendency of pulling back whenever I had to talk to to people that I may not really know which made me fall into the group of being action-oriented. When I assessed myself, I was within the people-oriented group which I guess I unintentionally answered in a manner that would be likened to talking and listening to family members or people I have some sort of personal relationship with.

This week I learned this week is the power of context. Our behaviour and perceptions are contextual which means that it can be influenced by the environment, our emotions, type of relationship et cetera. Something else I learned is that to be a competent communicator, we should listen to understand what is being said and try not to take things personally because people may be going through some things in their lives.

  1. Hi Idiele,
I'm curious to know your relationship to the two people you chose to take the surveys. They seem to know you well. I can tell that your self-assessment and the assessment of the two other people came together and allowed you to reflect on who you are as a communicator. Your experience this week demonstrates the power of reflection and perception (how we and/or other perceive us). Thank you for a great post.
    Best,
    Beatriz

  2. Hi Adiele, It is great to choose people that know you well and are able to assess you honestly. Your listening style results were interesting that how you view yourself and ho w others view you are completely different. Did you discuss with the two people what they see in you to score you as action oriented?
