Communicating Differently in a Diverse World

The concept of self helps me to communicate differently with people from different groups and cultures. I say this because by being self aware and taking into account my limits, values and overall well-being, I am able to identify how I want to be treated and acknowledged by people which in-turn impacts the way I communicate with others. (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, J., 2018).
I communicate differently to people from different cultures because I believe that their language and codes would be different based on their experiences. For instance, at work, I have some colleagues that I am very free with and can discuss sensitive issues with and there are those I am strictly professional with. When I communicate with children, I try to use simple and direct words with them so that they understand me clearly. Furthermore, I always come down to their level and make eye contact when speaking.
The strategies I would use are self monitoring which is taking into account my environment and the people around me at any point in time for signs on how to go about communicating (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, J., 2018).
A second strategy would be communicating in a way that is understandable to the target audience. If I encode a message in a way that the receiver cannot decode it, then I have not effectively communicated. (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, J., 2018).
A third strategy would be to listen attentively to other people and ask questions concerning their culture (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, J., 2018).

  1. Hi! I am so glad you included listening in your post. That is a big part of communicating with those that are different than you. Great job.
