Adjourning

The five stages of team building from forming, storming, norming, performing & adjourning progresses at the rate at which the team members are willing to put in effort and commitment to achieve a goal or vision (Abudi, 2010).
The group I found the hardest so far to leave was when I was a part of the Road Safety Corp. It was tough because this was the opportunity that taught me a lot in life. My leadership skills, negotiation skills and even patience. Also I was in awe of the projects we were all able to accomplish for the community. We painted pedestrian crossings on high traffic roads in some towns and also controlled traffic during some rush hours on roads that lacked traffic lights. I also think about how we were able to rally around and contribute some money to a member who was involved in a fire accident at home. This truly showed us how much can be done when we have a united voice. All in all, it was an experience I still remember. Our closing ritual was to review all we were able to do, went out to eat and had light conversations to close out this chapter of our lives.
When I think about adjourning from my colleagues, I would put in effort in ensuring that I leave positive comments to their blogposts and also thank them profusely for adding a new perspective to the topics we studied in the discussion sections.

  1. Adiele, That sound like a wonderful group you were part of that taught you valuable life lessons that stayed with you after it was done. I can see how tough that may have been when it ended because it seems like you built genuine friendships with them by working so close and for a purpose.

  2. Adiele, the group you described sounds like one that would definitely be hard to say goodbye to. Do you agree that the more effective groups are the hardest to say goodbye to? Do you think success has anything to do with the difficulty of the adjourning stage? Just curious on your thoughts. Thanks!
