GETTING TO KNOW INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS: PART 1

The Organisation in focus is CARE. This is a humanitarian organisation that is dedicated to fight poverty globally by getting involved in other issues that stem out of poverty. It was founded in 1945 and since then has helped in improving the lives of people. CARE has placed emphasis on working with women because it believes that through empowered women, families and communities can rise from poverty.
What strikes me the most about CARE is that their work is widely spread and spans through very important and sometimes overlooked areas concerning people living in poverty. The organisation helps with disaster relief, offers support to women's empowerment, provides necessary resources to boost economic development and food security, and also advocate for social justice in labor and against sexual violence.
I have leant from this organisation that poverty is multifaceted and in order to completely alleviate poverty, one must be willing to look into all of the other things. For instance in the case of women who work in clothing factories in Asia, they are often subjected to abuse and are usually underpaid which gives them little to no hope of leaving their jobs to find something better. Another example is with the local farmers who have agricultural harvests that buyers need. When these transactions are not a fair trade, these farmers remain in their poor state and do not have enough resources to buy necessary products and services for their families like healthcare and household goods and even farming tools.
Something else I learned is that if a project can not be achieved as an individual, it is okay to partner with people that share the same passion in order to achieve that goal.
I have been inspired by how far and intentional CARE has been able to make an impact in the lives of people worldwide. I believe that making an impact can be done in small ways as well and all it takes is just the first good deed.

  1. Thank you for sharing! It is so important that this organization not only is focusing on poverty but also what causes poverty such as natural disasters.

  2. Reading the stories on the Care website were very touching. I enjoyed reading how Pema, even though she suffer some terrible things in her life, she wants to do something to help young girls not experience what she went through. The stats on the child survival is sad. To hear that 7 million children will die before their 5th birthday is a high number. Thanks for sharing the Care website.
